We are the future!
What has happened to this generation?!
WARNING: A bit of a rant incoming—but I promise, it comes from a place of hope.
We, the future, have dropped the ball in some serious ways. The idea that each generation would be better than the last? Yeah, I’m not sure that applies anymore. And I don’t say this to be negative, I say it because we should be doing better. We can be better.
We’ve made progress in so many ways, political awareness has increased among young people, conversations about equality, mental health, and environmental responsibility are happening more than ever, and we’re seeing real advancements in medicine, technology, and human rights. We had our first African American president, our first female candidate for office, and more global efforts than ever before to combat climate change. Charities and social justice movements are thriving. In so many ways, we are better than the generations before us.
But then, I look around, and I wonder, where did we go wrong? For all the growth we’ve had, we’ve also lost something. The simplicity. The beauty of genuine human connection. The things that once mattered most.
Take Woodstock, for example, one of the most legendary moments in history. It was supposed to be “Three Days of Peace & Music,” but it became so much more. Over 400,000 people of all backgrounds, all beliefs, gathered together for the sake of love, unity, and freedom. No social media to document it. No distractions. Just people, existing together, living in the moment. No racial fights, no judgement, no hatred, just peace.
Now, fast forward to today, where people can’t even put their phones down long enough to have a real conversation. The internet, in all its greatness, has also become one of the biggest downfalls of our generation. It’s a blessing and a curse. We have access to unlimited knowledge, we can stay connected to loved ones no matter where they are, we can express our opinions freely. But at the same time? We’ve become obsessed with it. Dependent on it. Instead of face-to-face conversations, we text. Instead of experiencing life, we post about it. Instead of real relationships, we’re scrolling through filtered versions of people’s lives, convincing ourselves that we’re somehow not enough.
And don’t even get me started on relationships. Marriage used to mean forever. The older generation fought for love, built lives together, worked through the struggles instead of running from them. Now? Divorce rates are higher than ever. Why? Because people give up too easily. Because the second something gets hard, they walk away. Because the idea of “forever” has been replaced with “until it doesn’t work for me anymore.” It’s heartbreaking, really.
I see those little old couples walking down the street, still holding hands, still looking at each other like they’re the only two people in the world. It makes me happy. But it also makes me sad. Because that kind of love is rare now. And the thought that we, as a generation, have tainted something so pure? That’s tragic.
And then there’s health. Cancer, disease, chronic illness, it’s everywhere now. It wasn’t like this before. The older generations lived simpler lives. They grew their own food, rode horses instead of flooding the world with cars, breathed in air that wasn’t saturated with pollution. Now, everything is chemicals, artificial, processed. And we wonder why sickness is more common than ever.
We’ve made so many advancements, yet somehow, we’ve regressed in the most important ways. And if you really want to talk about regression—let’s talk politics.
How did we go from leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Barack Obama—to Trump? From men who fought for justice, for equality, for the people, to a man who built his entire platform on division, discrimination, and lies? I mean, really. The man wanted to build a wall, and not just any wall, but one that was see-through so that they could “watch Mexicans trying to cross.”
Like…is this real life?! How did we let that happen? How did we go from electing leaders who inspired hope, who made real change, to electing someone who tweeted like a middle school bully? It was the biggest step backward for our generation. And it proved something terrifying, people aren’t voting based on integrity, on intelligence, on character. They’re voting based on fear. On hate. And that is something we need to change.
And that’s really what this all comes down to. Change. We can’t just talk about wanting a better world, we have to create it. We have to take action. We have to be the generation that proves we can be better.
We need to bring back the realness, the rawness of human connection. We need to stop living through screens and start living. We need to hold onto love, fight for it, instead of throwing it away the second it gets hard. We need to protect our health, our planet, our future. We need to demand better from our leaders.
It’s up to us to fulfill the promise that each generation gets stronger. It won’t just happen on its own. We have to make it happen. Because if we don’t, then what was all this progress really for?
Peace, love & let’s strive to make the world a better place xoxo

I do like the manner in which you have framed this specific difficulty and it does present me a lot of fodder for consideration. On the other hand, coming from just what I have personally seen, I basically hope when the feedback pile on that people today remain on issue and in no way get started on a soap box regarding the news of the day. Still, thank you for this exceptional piece and even though I can not go along with the idea in totality, I regard the standpoint. Therese Lucius Ensign
