That fickle thing called love

With Valentine’s Day around the corner—or Love Day, as I prefer to call it—it feels only right to talk about the one thing that connects us all. Love.

Love is wild. It’s unpredictable. It’s the most beautiful thing in the world, yet somehow, it can be the most painful too. It’s in the air, in the spaces between people, in the moments that catch us off guard. It’s in the way we hold our breath when we see someone we adore. In the way a song can make us feel understood. In the way a scent can transport us back to a memory so vivid, it feels like we never left.

Love drives everything. Love for a person, a pet, a passion. Love for a dream, a place, a feeling. Love for a memory, a hope, a future. It doesn’t always take the shape we expect. Sometimes, it’s loud and all-consuming, filling every inch of our existence. Other times, it’s a quiet presence, like a whisper in the background, steady and unwavering.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. Not because I don’t believe in love, because I do, but because love isn’t meant to be boxed into a single day. It isn’t about grand gestures, overpriced flowers, or glitter-covered cards. Love should be in the everyday moments: in the way someone remembers how you take your coffee, in the way a friend checks in on you when you’ve been a little too quiet, in the way a dog wags its tail like you’re the best thing in the world. But if we’re talking about Valentine’s Day chocolate? Yeah, that’s a love I won’t turn down.

Love, for all its beauty, is complicated. It lifts us up, makes us feel invincible. But it can also break us in ways we never saw coming. The pain of losing love, whether through heartbreak, distance, or something as final as death, can feel like a physical wound, an ache that lingers long after the person is gone. The ghost of them stays in the spaces they once filled. In the songs they loved. In the places you went together.

And then there’s unrequited love. The kind that makes you feel small. The kind that makes you wonder why you weren’t enough. The kind that lingers in the back of your mind, even when you know you should have let go a long time ago. Love, when it isn’t returned, can be cruel. But even that pain is proof that you have the capacity to love deeply, and that in itself is something beautiful.

I’ve always been fascinated by the different love stories around me. Some are effortless, like my best friend and her fiancé, who have never really fought. Their love is steady, like a calm sea, always certain, always safe. Then there’s my parents, who fell in love in an instant, married after three months, and have been navigating life together ever since. Love came easily to them, and while they’ve had their struggles, they’ve never wavered. They are a team.

But then, there are the love stories that have been through hell and back. The ones that had to be torn apart before they could be rebuilt. The ones that make you believe in second chances. I’ve always admired Will and Jada Pinkett Smith for that reason. To the world, they seemed like the perfect couple—always laughing, always in sync. But behind closed doors, their love was tested. Jada once admitted there was a time she woke up every morning and cried for 45 days straight. Not because of infidelity or betrayal, but because she felt lost in a love that didn’t fit right anymore.

They had to break before they could heal. They separated. They redefined what love meant to them. And in the end, they chose each other, again and again. Not because it was easy, but because it was worth it. When asked why they never got divorced, Jada said it was never an option. And Will? He said if he left her, he would spend the rest of his life searching for someone like her—in vain. That’s the kind of love that gets me. The kind that endures. The kind that knows pain but chooses to stay anyway.

Love isn’t perfect. It’s messy, and raw, and sometimes it feels impossible. But it’s also the one thing worth fighting for. It’s in the arguments and the make-ups. In the moments of doubt and the moments of absolute certainty. In the way you can be so angry at someone but still choose them anyway. Love, in any form, is the thing that makes life worth it.

So, on the 14th, whether you’re celebrating with someone special, wrapped up in the warmth of a friendship, or simply indulging in your favourite chocolates alone (because self-love is love too), I hope you feel it. Love, in all its forms. Because no matter how unpredictable, no matter how painful, no matter how complicated, love is everything.

And the more love we send out into the world, the more it finds its way back to us.
