*Reflection*

This past week, I have had time to reflect on my life up to this date. Word that comes to mind is strength! I recently turned thirty four, that was a big birthday for me! I’m sure many of you are like me and have a “scary” age. For many a personal reason… you’ll feel old, your life isn’t exactly where you want it to be or maybe just the number itself. Many emotional reasons of your own. Mine is thirty five! So turning the year before my scary age was a little daunting. I have never been the type of person who cares about a number or where my life is at that number. You will never know what can happen in life so associating a number with a life period was never a worry of mine. The age part as well was never a concern, I definitely don’t feel like i’m THIRTY FOUR and it’s all about perception! I think for me it’s more so the number itself… THIRTY FIVE, half way to FORTY and for all you forty and over people I am not calling you old by no means. Forty to me is still so young! I can honestly say I don’t know why forty is so intimidating to me!! At forty, fifty, sixty, your life can also at any moment change drastically and things can happen that you never expected. Just like how in your twenties life changed so much from one day to the next! I seriously don’t miss my twenties! The twenties are so unexpected; your emotions are up and down, most don’t know what they want to do with their lives, financials are unstable, loved ones don’t seem as important as they are in your later years, immaturity, the list goes on. I mean, my late twenties were the most fun and spontaneous times of my life for sure but there comes a time where you just want stability. Instead of being all over the place like in your twenties, when you hit thirty you want to be in one place. At least that’s what I want! So why strength then? Well at any age, life throws at you things you never see coming. Good and bad. I have always been a “I’m such a good person, why do bad things happen to me?” or “Things are going too well, what’s gonna happen next?” type of person and that’s terrible, but really it’s all about strength to change the mindset and roll with the punches. My mother would say it’s about my choices, but that’s a whole other lengthy blog subject. Its about how you deal with the ups and downs on this roller coaster called life, how you react to them, handle it and what you do next. I’m sure all of us have actions or choices that we have done that we would take back, perfection is impossible in this world hence the emotion of “regret” being in existence. Strength pertains to so many things in this life; staying strong in tough times, the emotional strength to admit when you’re wrong, having the strength to take the actions of a first step to help yourself or someone else, staying strong when fighting for what you want (a certain job, house, healing, change) refraining from giving up when things don’t go as planned. One of the main actions in life that we have to take with us daily is strength! I googled strength and one of the definitions that came up was:

“Strength goes beyond emotions and addresses the thoughts and behaviours that affect your overall quality of life. Mental strength involves developing daily habits that build mental muscle. It also involves giving up bad habits that hold you back!”

I love that line, “strength affects the overall quality of life!!” Really, don’t we all want to be strong?! That’s such a great way to feel about ourselves, I AM STRONG! It truly takes strength to do all things and like the definition says, daily!! Physical strength to get up in the morning and go through our daily routines, fighting a physical or mental illness, having a baby, running a marathon, working out to make our bodies stronger, taking my 120 pound dog for a walk. That’s a work out in itself!! Emotional strength to go through trauma, handle the highs and lows of life, acknowledging our own personal flaws and doing anything in our power to change them. Strength to love ourselves in spite of those flaws. Accepting who we are. Embracing the great times when sometimes that little voice in our head tells us to worry. Being unselfish, envisioning light at the end of the tunnel, not being revengeful in times of hurt, fighting the little devil on our shoulders that gives us bad advice and sometimes the bad can seem more fun, we’re human! Strength to choose not to give up on ourselves and others. Knowing right from wrong. Strength to love. Not hurting the ones we care about with our own selfish needs. Realizing that sometimes we can’t fix ourselves on our own and get the strength to ask for help. Accepting consequences to our actions, I do believe in Karma and she’s always around. Strength to maintain relationships of any kind. Strength to not be too hard on ourselves when we makes mistakes. Strength to control our actions. Staying strong through the bad times and enjoying the great times. We need strength for everything!

So for any of you going through anything tough this life can throw at us, I wish you strength!! I wish you strength to keep going. Strength to take action. Strength to love over hating. Strength to forgive yourself and others. Strength to expel our egos. Strength to be the best person you can be, especially in times where you doubt yourself or it seems impossible. Strength to say no to bad decisions or yes to intimidating ones. Strength to never give up! Strength to keep fighting, whether it be an illness, for what you want, or to just become the best version of yourself! Also, it takes strength to have strength! Life is hard and it takes major strength just to get through it and make great things happen. And if you are at all like me, being strong enough to get through this horrible season called winter for the next six months!!
