Let us be better humans

I just finished watching a movie called “mother!”. For anyone who is going to watch it sooner or later, MAJOR spoiler alert with this blog. If you’re like my best friend and can’t even watch a trailer for a movie because it’ll ruin it, exit… blog… now!!

So the movie depicts a story of a married couple played by Javier Bardem and my girl Jennifer Lawrence. Now researching this thriller after watching it, since there was a big HUH in my mind after it was done, the story is said to be inspired by the book of Genesis. For those who don’t know too much about the bible, the book of Genesis is all about the story of the creation and the beginning of mankind. After I read the research it all made sense and made the movie so much more interesting.

It starts out with the couple in their big beautiful house that was once burned down. Javier Bardem is a writer and Jennifer is his somber, youthful wife who has been restoring the house room by room. Total girl power in this flick, plastering the walls herself and all! I’m always so envious of people who are handy because I.. AM… NOT! While watching the movie I was totally confused, I even stopped watching it mid way to return to it the next day. The movie starts with a glimpse of Lawrence engulfed in flames. The next scene cuts to the happy couple at home when there’s a knock at the door by the incredibly talented Ed Harris. He “thinks” he’s at a bed & breakfast but the happy couple ends up letting him stay anyways because he has nowhere to go and it’s late in the night. Bardem and Harris become fast friends and spend the evening drinking and laughing while Lawrence is incredibly uncomfortable with his impromptu presence and turns in early. She wakes in the middle of the night to find her husband aiding Harris in the washroom since he over indulged on alcohol, catching a glimpse of a big scar on Harris’ rib. Morning comes and there is another knock at the door. Standing there is the gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer who is Harris’ wife. Lawrence is confused by this not even knowing he had a wife. She questions her husband who spent the whole night conversing with Harris and he didn’t know about it either. Pfeiffer brings in this eerie presence, way too intrusive personally and physically, walking around the house like it’s her own. Lawrence’s character is also quite a mystery! A little reminiscent of Carrie, likeable but there’s something odd about her. Her uncomfort throughout the whole movie makes me think she’s got a major phobia of any social situations. Her husband on the other hand is total opposite, loving the company and attention since Harris’ character ends up being a huge fan of his writing, who turns out to be dying and wanted to meet Bardem before he passes on. Other intruders enter the poor, unearthed Lawrence’s home turning out to be the sons of the imposing couple. There’s a big fight over Harris’ will, one son was left out of it and the other got everything. The one son left out of the will, trying to get his parents to change their minds, gets into a fight with his brother and the star son is killed by the outcast. Bardem feels terrible for the couple and let’s them have a memorial at his house. That’s when the chaos begins. The many guests invited are impolite, breaking things, being inappropriate, trying to have “private time” in Lawrence & Bardems bedroom, etc… Lawrence is panicking while her husband seems to keep giving these intruders chances. It gets to be too much for Lawrence and she kicks them all out. Lawrence & Bardem have a fight which turns into making up. The next day she’s pregnant… HUH?! 9 months later all is well with the couple, Bardem finally finishes a new book and Lawrence is about to pop. She plans a celebratory dinner for her husband before baby comes and there it is, another knock at the door. Slews of photographers and fans are there to see her best selling husband. They swarm the house, again breaking stuff, being perverse, partying, performing seances idolizing the writer, tearing off wallpaper, acts of violence, swats coming in to break up the chaos… insanity! All too weird! The movie comes to a close with Lawrence having enough and threatening to burn down the house and all the people inside. Bardem begs her to forgive them. To give them another chance! She doesn’t and the house is engulfed by flames. The next morning a new women is with Bardem in their back to normal house and the story ends.

Was that confusing to you too? What was the point? Well this is the explanation…. Bardem plays God. He writes stories, creates things. Forgives people and keeps giving them chances even tho they don’t deserve it. Harris and Pfeiffer are Adam and Eve. Hence the scar on Harris’ rib and Pfeiffer’s manifestation from it the next day. Their sons are Cain and Able. The vengeful one kills his brother. Lawrence is mother nature. She’s protective of her home while all the intruders are destroying it and wants them gone! When mother nature has had enough and wipes out mankind, God has to start all over again like he did in the book of Genesis.

This is sadly the story of civilization. People live on this beautiful earth and don’t take care of it! Defiling and doing whatever they please to it and others. Mankind was made to be kind, good, selfless, compassionate, loving. Live on this earth together as neighbours and nurture it. Brothers and sisters sharing the earth with love and solidarity! Instead people can be greedy, selfish, racist, unappreciative, cause wars and hatred. Even still, God is forgiving and keeps giving mankind chances to prove we deserve to be here and that we can be the good humans he has faith in us to be. This movie puts a lot into perspective and is quite a scary but real depiction of what this world is turning into. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do about it but try to be the best humans we can be and try to take care of our planet as much as possible. In turn, maybe our love will spread more and more! I think anyone who can, should watch this movie. Puts the meaning into a more literal way of how we should all take care of our home planet earth and try to be better humans!!

Peace, Love & be kind to Mother Nature!!
