The Universe Speaks in Signs—Are You Listening? Do you believe in signs?

I do. Always have. Little nudges from the universe. Subtle, almost imperceptible, but undeniably there. A song that plays at just the right moment. A name you haven’t heard in years suddenly appearing in conversation. A whisper of something that tugs at you, like the universe is trying to tell you something.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve asked for signs. I don’t know why—maybe it’s faith, maybe it’s intuition, maybe it’s just the desperate human need to believe that something bigger than us is guiding the way.

And lately? It’s been dimes. Not just coins. Specifically dimes. In the weirdest places. Wedged into the baseboards of my bedroom. One perfectly placed in my jacket pocket. Another sitting on my work desk, as if it had been waiting for me. In my shoe. On the street, gleaming up at me like it was begging to be noticed. Then, a few weeks ago, my coworker randomly handed me one. “For good luck,” she said with a smile.

Yesterday morning, I put my coffee down in my car’s cup holder, and there it was. A single dime, resting there so deliberately it almost felt placed. Not mixed in with my other change. Not carelessly dropped between my seats. Just there. Waiting. At first, I thought it was a coincidence. But after the fourth, the fifth, the tenth dime, I started paying attention.

So, naturally, I Googled it. And what I found? Chills. “The spiritual meaning of finding dimes goes back to the number ten—symbolic of coming full circle. It often represents the presence of a loved one, a message from beyond, a sign that you’re at a turning point in your life. That change is coming. That you are seen. That you are loved. That you are, at last, returning to yourself.”

Returning to myself. Coming full circle. That’s the one that hit me the hardest. I was the girl who faded away. For a very long time, I didn’t feel like me. I’ve written about this before, how I became anxious, insecure, a worrier, which was never who I was. I used to be so sure of myself. I moved to Australia on a whim. I made big decisions without overthinking them. I took risks because I knew, deep down, I’d figure it out.

Once, when my mom was anxious about me leaving, a friend of mine—who’s known me since I was a teenager—told her, “Eh, you know Shaira. She’s always so spontaneous and can take care of herself. She’ll be fine.” And he was right. I always was fine. That same friend told me recently, “You know yourself, Shaira. Even during the toughest times, you always make it through.” And I loved that he saw me that way. I just wish I still saw myself that way. But for the past few years? I didn’t.

I was in an environment that drained me. A place where I wasn’t nurtured. Where I wasn’t a beautiful flower in the garden—hell, I don’t even think I was noticed. And eventually, I started to wither. I let it happen. I stayed when I should’ve left. I gave people permission to disrespect me more than once. I let them make me feel like I wasn’t good enough. I believed them when they made me feel replaceable.

I forgot what made me special. I forgot who I was before the world told me who I should be. One of my best friends recently called me “our little ray of sunshine.” And do you know what my first thought was? Me? That used to be a given. I was the one always laughing, making jokes, trying to see the positive in all areas. Now, it’s a question.

I let people take so much from me, and I will never forgive myself for that. How dare I let anyone make me question my own worth? But maybe that’s what the dimes are telling me. Maybe they’re reminding me that the girl I was before—she never really left. She’s still in there. She’s just waiting for me to pull her back out of the darkness and into the light.

I saw a quote recently that said: “When a flower is trapped in dark, dry, harsh weather, it withers. But when it’s in the sun, nurtured, cared for—it blooms.” And for so long, I didn’t bloom. I shrank. I put myself in an environment that dimmed me, that made me feel small. And the worst part? I let them. I convinced myself that being overlooked was normal. That being disrespected was something I should tolerate. That my good heart, my energy, my light wasn’t as special as I once thought it was. -But I know better now.

So if you’re reading this and you’ve felt the same—if you’ve been hurt, dismissed, made to feel like you aren’t enough—listen to me when I say this: You are enough. You are not too much. You are not “just another flower.” You are worthy of love, respect, and a space in this world that is yours.

And if you’re struggling to believe that? The universe will keep finding ways to remind you. It’ll send you a song, a moment, a memory, a feeling. Or maybe—it’ll leave dimes in places you can’t ignore. Because you, too, are coming full circle. To come full circle means that after all the storms, all the chaos, all the uncertainty—the same thing you started with still exists.

I was always somewhat confident. Always goofy, strong, adventurous, a big kid at heart. And I’m not letting anyone take that from me again. My best friends? They remind me of that every day. Michelle, the happiest, most positive person I know. Ines, the old-world romantic who believes in people with her whole heart and never judges. And me? I’m the sarcastic, silly, always-rooting-for-the-underdog type. The adventurer. The one who used to believe in herself without question. That girl? She’s slowly coming back.

So maybe the dimes are validation that I’m on the right path. Maybe they’re a sign that I’m not lost, just finding my way home. Maybe they’re a reminder that no matter how much someone tries to make you feel small, you are, and always have been, irreplaceable.

And so are you. So if you’ve ever let someone dull your light, if you’ve ever questioned your worth because of another person’s actions, if you’ve ever wondered if you’ll ever feel like yourself again, you will.

And if you start to forget, keep an eye out. You never know when a sneaky little dime will show up to remind you.

I know that was super cheesy, but also? True. Because I believe in you. And you should ALWAYS believe in you, too!
