Family over everything!!

Family day is on Monday, it’s so sweet that we now have a holiday that is solely made for the most important thing in the world! Family comes in all shapes and forms. Blood related, self made, pets. Blood related family will naturally be in your life always, no matter how hard the relationship is. Well not for all, but most. Parents, sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts and uncles. Man do I ever have a crazy family, as i’m sure we all do in some way! It’s not always beautiful, some family relationships fall apart even when blood binds us. We all have some family members that we don’t even know or were only around for our childhood. Life events, circumstances beyond our control or geography gets in the way of it at times. I have family in Portugal I have never met or only have memories of from when I was a child. Our blood related family shapes us into the people we become. One of my uncles in Quebec played a big part on my personality and likes but after I moved to Toronto I didn’t know him as much. I still have visions in my head of when my two cousins and I were kids, going on road trips with him in his olive green Volkswagen Westfalia. Did I ever love that van and they are still my favourite vehicles, which I presume is from those times travelling with my uncle. Well other than the classic 1969 Mustang, the Volkswagen Van and Beetle are a super close second! I remember the campervan had pull down bunk beds that we could sleep on. There was a little sun roof we could open up and see the stars through. It had a kitchen in the back and a pull out table stored in the trunk. I was actually searching them on Google yesterday and they can go for up to $45,000!! I remember the day he sold it, I was so sad!! I wish he had given it to me, not for the money but for the love I had for it and still do. I would’ve never let that thing go! My uncle was such a hippie, which is also I presume where I get my hippie nature from. I know it’s not from my parents, they have no hippie dna in them whatsoever!! My uncle loves flowers so much he still works for the Tulip festival in Ottawa. He never had a steady 9-5 job, always took little odd jobs here and there because he wasn’t a conformist. He was and still is a lover of Marijuana, is a lover of people, always had guests over in his backyard that he converted into a huge sandbox where they would chill out and play music. He always lived with at least three people at a time. HUGE hippie! I don’t have all those traits but I do have a lot of hippie qualities in me, which I know stems from my crazy uncle and the influence he had on me as a child. My one aunt loved the band The Cranberries which I am also a lover of as well and i’m sure that’s from her playing their CD all the time. Blood relatives are the reason we are who we are and will always be family no matter what! Self made family can be anything. I’m an only child but my girlfriends have become my sisters. I have known my three best friends for twenty years now and they are definitely my self made family. We love each other unconditionally! We have been through every stage of life together… School, heartbreak, partying, travelling, new jobs, marriage, health scares etc.. We are always there for each other in good and bad times supporting one another all the way, even when we disagree! We never give up on our friendship and always put work into it because that’s what keeps it going! For all types of relationships really! We’re not always perfect, we’re all very different and even if we don’t talk all the time when we do its like no time has passed. I don’t know what I would do without them! Also boyfriends/girlfriends, husbands/wives, partners in daily life of any kind are self made. We meet our person and decide they are the ones we want to spend everyday with. Go through our daily life routine with. Wake up thinking about them, go through the day talking to them, go to sleep thinking of them. They are self made but become family as well. We cant imagine our lives without them! I had my own little family, someone to share my life with everyday. Deciding everything as a team. Eating breakfast, lunch and dinner together. Spending weekends on the couch being happy doing nothing together, while our dog would lay his big head on a pillow behind my partners back. Sleeping in our big bed together as a family. Taking baths on cold days while our dog sat beside us on the floor and licked our faces. I still to this day think he did that because he thought he was cleaning us. It was wonderful, until it wasn’t, but everything happens for a reason! That’s the thing, partnership is beautiful and the goal in life really. Not for everyone but for most. I know it is for me, i’m not a person who goes easily or quickly from one person to the next. I want my own family! Someone to go through life with, who you know know matter what they will never leave you! Family is what life is based around. We all grow up knowing that one day the goal is to inevitably have a self made family of our own. They aren’t blood but they become blood. My doggy is my family. He’s like my son. I didn’t birth him but I feel like I have sometimes. I have the responsibility of taking care of him daily, feeding him, bathing him, disciplining him, making sure he doesn’t get sick or hurt. When he does, I am so worried like a mom. Well i’m a little too much sometimes, even if he’s outside for too long I get worried!! A while back he stepped on a nail and his foot became so infected and bloated. It was massive! I was so worried all the time about him. I ran out at 1am to the corner store to get him allergy pills before we found out what was really the cause of the infection, like a mother would for their child. I soaked his foot in salt water three times a day and taped a sock to his foot so he wouldn’t lick at the wound. Some people might think “Ok Shaira, it’s a dog” but he’s my baby and a lot of us pet owners feel this way. They are a huge and special part of our family!! Family are people we could not imagine life without, don’t ever want to and will do anything to keep forever. Lovers, friends, pets, parents. We need to appreciate them to the fullest because we never know what can happen from one day to the next. My father actually got some scary news yesterday. If you don’t know me, my father is my favourite person in this world! We’re very similar. When we fight we talk it out with each other, instead of ignoring each other or arguing like me and my mother do. We’re not judgemental and let people make their own decisions. We’ll give you our advice if you ask but at the end of the day it’s up to you and we will be there for you no matter what. We both love movies, music, sweets. We both have Peter Pan syndrome, always want to be travelling, love clothes. My father was diagnosed with Stage 1 skin cancer yesterday, they caught it early but it’s in a pretty scary spot! He went for an intense shoulder surgery a couple months back and they found a spot on his chest that the surgeon immediately wanted him to check out just in case it was cancerous. I cried instantly when my mom told me. My amazing, wonderful, good man of a father with cancer?! Life is so unpredictable and anything can happen in a second. My life without my dad is unimaginable!! I know he will be ok because he HAS to be but things like this are an important reminder that we all need to love our family to the fullest everyday because we never know what can happen! Inevitably they wont be here forever, that’s just the way life is and that’s why any form of family should be our first priority! Not material things, pettiness, money, arguments, anything really that at the end of the day is truly not important but just love and family! Family of any kind should be the most prized possession because it is the purest form of love! So on this special long weekend, let us love our families a little more than usual! Give them hugs, kisses and our undivided attention because no matter what it’s family over everything!!
