Day for lovers…
Valentines day…
Since Valentines day is approaching, i thought i’d share my thoughts on this day for lovers…
First of all I’ve never been a very “traditional” human being, in pretty much all cases.. clothing, jobs, cars, wedding ceremonies and the list goes on. No offence to most people who love the whole two hundred plus wedding receptions with the wedding parties elaborate grand entrances, full hair and makeup, super expensive high class decorations, individuals invited that the happy couple barely even know and the overpriced wedding dress you’ll only wear once.. not my scene! I’d much rather take all that money and backpack through Europe!! The yearly traditions, like Thanksgiving where we take that one day to give thanks for all the blessings we have, which is great, but shouldn’t we be thankful everyday?! Valentines day to me isn’t any different! We all don’t share one purpose in life, don’t all have the same plans for our futures but some of us have the same wants of spending the rest of our lives with one person. Sharing a life, having a partner in crime, creating our own families. So why the need of this ONE specific day of February 14th to show our love? Again, shouldn’t we show our love to that special someone everyday?! And yes, lives get busy. Work, family, friends, adult obligations all keep us occupied sometimes from really showing appreciation to our beloved as much as we’d like, so having the reminder of Valentines day can be handy! But why just for one day?
St. Valentine- Texts state that he was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius Gothicus. He was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Valentine was commemorated on February the 14th, in turn this day is associated with courtly love.
Indeed that’s a pretty romantic background! History of great lovers were always a fondness of mine. Romeo & Juliet, Mark Antony & Cleopatra, Pocahontas & John Smith, Napoleon & Josephine, Homer & Marge Simpson! Celebrating love and partnership is necessary but in my opinion not just on one specific day! It’s very difficult, sadly nowadays, to keep relationships of any kind alive! I’ve been extremely lucky to have friends still in my life since elementary school but not to say that it doesn’t take work, from both sides! Just like coupled or married relationships… keeping up communication, working on likes and dislikes, compromising, all in all being partners and working through life’s issues but most importantly showing our love to each other on a daily basis! Now that doesn’t mean saying “i love u” every second of the day, but really just in the little things! A kiss or hug here and there, holding hands, saying thank you, being there through good times and bad, listening to each others thoughts and feelings, making your partner a nice dinner, a shoulder to lean on, being considerate, cuddles, flowers for no reason not just because it’s Valentines day although the chocolate and candy i’ll gladly take! Most importantly for me is lots of laughter!! Any of us who have found the love of our lives are very lucky!! It’s hard to find that special someone who you can grow through life’s crazy moments and still persevere in love while never giving up! Being best friends, wanting to see each other as much as we can, missing them when they’re gone, sitting in silence and still having fun… being in love is such a beautiful thing and a true blessing!! We need to take every day to be thankful, show our love and appreciation for that one special person not solely on February 14th! Valentines day dates back circa 496, so there’s definitely always going to be this day for lovers and no i’m no Scrooge when it comes to this day of love! I absolutely think it’s a sweet gesture to have a day solely for the lovers but my point of this blog is not to let our partner feel loved only on this one day but to remember to show our love consistently and never forget how lucky we are to have them in our lives… and if we’re truly lucky, forever!
1 Corinthians 13: Love is patient and kind. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Now, however, these three remain: faith, hope, love; but the greatest of these is love.
Peace & Happy Love day everyone xoxo
