1st Monday in May
It’s that time of year again… April’s showers bear resemblance to God watering his plants to bloom for Spring. The faint hint of Summer in the air. It also brings us THE most important fashion day of the year, the first Monday in May, the Met Gala. This year literally on May 1st.
From the time when I was just a little girl, fashion was the “be all and end all” and still is to this day. It wasn’t just about the clothes! Trust me when I say I am a fashion ADDICT, that is an understatement. Just ask my parents!
Clothing to me are fabrics fashioned in heaven in all different shapes, colours and forms.
From one of my top all time favourite designers, Vivienne Westwood’s, high fashion punk with her use of corsets, tweed and plaid.
To Betsey Johnson’s bold and colourful avant-garde London inspired pieces. Alexander McQueen’s Roman gothic vibes and Dolce and Gabbana’s Mediterranean prints and textures.
Balmain’s impeccable sculpted lines and tailoring. YSL’s signature shoulder pads, Versace’s ultra glamorous costumes and Zuhair Murad’s whimsical, flowy and feminine silhouettes.
Fashion to me personally, was always something more than just being clothes. It is art. It is self expression. It is our personality without describing it with words. What we wear literally represents who we are. I personally would never wear the original, ultra feminine, classic Chanel suit. Although they are gorgeous. My personality by no means screams class like the iconic pastel coloured blazer and matching skirt. Now you would definitely find me wearing a Vivienne Westwood corset dress with its intricate detail, vintage structure and refrain of conformity. That is the whole point of fashion, to show ourselves, down to our soul, through what we cover our human forms in.
This year the Met Gala was an ode to Karl Lagerfeld, the theme “A line of beauty”. Karl Lagerfeld began his fashion career in the 1950’s working for some of the top fashion houses such as Patou, Chloe, Fendi, Chanel and one of my personal favourites Balmain.
Lagerfeld had many different iconic fashion phases. In the early seventies he brought us softer looks. Meanwhile later that same year he brought to light his infamous big shoulder pad phase. Karl’s love of the eighteenth century was always on display. The lace trim, cinched waist, thigh high boots and headwear, to name a few.
As well as his signature structures with the many brooches and chains.
Lagerfeld’s work garnered him the name of being the chameleon in the fashion world, bringing the rich history of fashion into a more modern day context. From his infamous black ultra tailored suits, to the leather gloves he’d always don, finger tips poking out the ends. His white hair always pulled back into a pony and his ever so famous brooches pinned to his ties. Lagerfeld is a legend in the fashion world and his name will never be forgotten.
When I was just entering my young adult stage of life, I gave up on my ultimate dream of going to Parsons School of Design to study fashion, ultimately to conform to the norm or “realistic” as most say. To be able to work with designers and the array of different styles they produce would’ve been a dream come true. Becoming a stylist and clothing people for a living was the goal to then maybe one day become a fashion designer with a line of her own. Still to this day that want is inside of me. Another dream of mine has always been to be able to witness a Met Gala first hand. To view all the costumes paraded about by people in the arts. The multitude of different textures, fabrics, shapes and colours of the beautiful garments dispersed throughout the whimsical backdrop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hmmm… watch me manifest that $H!T!
Here are just a few of my favourite looks from this year’s Met Gala:
Peace, Love & follow your dreams xoxo
